With the mini bye in the books and players and coaches back at Halas Hall to prepare for next Monday’s Week 8 matchup with the Seahawks, Bears head coach Ben Johnson met with the media today. Johnson made no bones about the challenge ahead in Seattle on Monday Night Football, acknowledging the Seahawks’ defense and the challenges it presents to an offense.
The trip to Seattle will not feature former Seahawks safety Coby Bryant, who is on injured reserve, rehabbing from knee surgery in August. Johnson was asked about Bryant’s timeline today and whether there was any more clarity now, two months after he originally said anywhere from December to February.
Johnson said he would remain vague about Bryant’s timeline but offered a bit of information:
“Yeah, he’s on track. In the near future here we’re going to start with some on-land running, but we’re still a little ways away from him doing the change-of-direction stuff, and that’s really going to be the stress test with him, is him being able to really push down on that knee and change direction at a high velocity. That’s still a little ways away,” Johnson said.
“From what I understand, he’s right on track; he’s working his tail off. Love seeing him in the building; he’s around these guys all the time, and really over the next month, that’ll go a long way to see whether we can get him back this year or not.”

Bryant had surgery on Aug. 7, four days after he hyperextended his left knee and sustained a bone bruise and small fracture during a training camp practice. After the surgery, Johnson told reporters that Chicago’s prized free-agent acquisition over the spring would miss four to six months, with the earliest return timeline in mid-December and the latest in February.
Johnson said he would keep Bryant’s timeline vague, and he did. But he also offered valuable insight into where he’s at in the rehab process and what hurdles he has to clear before they can consider bringing him back. He also made it seem as though if Bryant couldn’t get past the stress test of the change-of-direction work within the next month, a return this season would be unlikely, without actually saying it.
But the update, albeit small and vague, gives me some optimism that a return is still in the plans. Typically, when Johnson is asked about an injured player who isn’t close to returning, he doesn’t answer. See Kyler Gordon. When asked about Bryant today, he at least entertained the question.
Having some idea of whether Bryant will return this season is good, given the NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and the secondary is a potential position of need. Speaking of the deadline, the moves made or not made could be a good tell regarding how they feel about Bryant’s timeline internally, based on whether or not they acquire a potential rental for that spot for the stretch run and postseason.
