ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Health launched a new dashboard tracking flu, RSV and COVID cases across the state.
The dashboard showed that as of last week, there were about 3,500 new flu cases statewide, compared to less than 700 cases during the same week last year, a 400% increase.
Flu cases have increased 19 percent in the past week, while COVID cases have dropped 20 percent. Local counties accounted for just under 150 flu cases this past week.
“And specifically regarding the flu, we’re seeing quite the early increase and rise in numbers of cases – of positive cases,” local officials said.
Monroe County also launched a dashboard focusing on local cases.
So far this season, New York state has reported 6,500 confirmed flu cases. The health department said fewer people are getting the flu shot than in recent years.
State numbers showed about 7% of flu patients have gone to the hospital, and local health leaders are concerned that the early start to flu season could add to hospital capacity issues.
The most common flu strain this year is Type A.
