After a well deserved Emmy for Succession, followed by a Critics Choice Award for All Her Fault, Sarah Snook has fans eager to see what’s next.
News broke earlier this year that she was attached to a limited-series adaptation of The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock‘s 1963 horror classic. And on Tuesday, October 27, more developments came to light…
Deadline now reports that HBO has nabbed the buzzy project — also based on Daphne du Maurier’s novella — which was being shopped by Universal Global Television over the summer for development.
Per Deadline, the new version of The Birds is described as a visceral, present-day reimagining of Hitchcock’s classic set in Alaska with a murder mystery at the center and new characters, led by a new female protagonist, Myra Massey (Snook). Here’s the longer synopsis offered back on May 29:
“Inspired by the film and Daphne du Maurier’s short story on which it was loosely based, The Birds introduces traveling magistrate Myra Massey (Snook) as she returns to her isolated Alaskan hometown for a routine presumptive death hearing, expecting a simple cold case. Instead, she finds her childhood friend’s bullet-ridden body. When Myra is forced to step outside her role as judge to untangle the mystery, nature itself turns hostile with a wave of bird attacks. Now, Myra isn’t just trying to close a case, she’s fighting to survive in a place where death lurks in both the shadows and the skies.”
As Deadline also noted on Tuesday, there have been previous attempts to reboot The Birds, but none saw the light of day. Here are a couple:
There was a feature remake announced in 2007 with Naomi Watts attached to star and Martin Campbell to direct A BBC series was announced in 2017 written by Irish playwright Conor McPherson. In addition to her award-winning TV work, Snook, 38, won a Tony last year for The Picture of Dorian Gray and a 2025 AACTA Best Actress Award for the Oscar-nominated animated film Memoir of a Snail.
