Senior Day takes on special meaning for Northwestern field hockey Olympian Ashley Sessa

Field hockey star Ashley Sessa, who competed in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, is a Pennsylvania native who has found a home in the Chicago area playing for Northwestern University.

At a recent game, Sessa, a senior Wildcat, walked onto Lakeside Field with her father and brother by her side and her mother, Tracy, in her hand on FaceTime.

“My wife has been battling breast cancer and brain cancer for the last seven years. And Ashley gets a lot from Tracy’s toughness,” said Bobby Sessa, Ashley’s father.

Tracy is also the reason Ashley, a member of the U.S. national team since 16 and now an Olympian, first became interested in the sport.

“Her mom was a field hockey player in high school. And when she turned five or six, it was like, ‘Here’s your stick,'” Bobby Sessa explained.

“I think my mom is a big reason why Ashley put a lot of effort into growing the game,” Anthony Sessa, Ashley’s brother, added.

Just last month, Ashley was working with young girls in Los Angeles.

“Ashley has a lot of free clinics, and they give out sticks,” Bobby Sessa said. “Once they pick up that stick, a lot of them don’t put it down.”

Tracy was there in Paris when Ashley scored a goal for the U.S. against Argentina. Also cheering her on were Kylie and Jason Kelce.

“Kylie’s a big supporter of USA Field Hockey. She was a field hockey player herself, and we’re sitting in the stands, and Ashley scores the goal. And it was just great to see everybody jump up and down, hug each other,” Bobby Sessa said.

Sunday brought a bittersweet milestone as it marked Ashley’s last regular-season home game as a Wildcat. Northwestern won 2-1, with her biggest fan looking on over FaceTime and her other two on the sidelines.

“It’s just cool to watch this little girl who’s just faster than everybody turning into the phenom she is today,” Anthony Sessa said.

As for what’s next for Ashley, she and her family are eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In the meantime, she’ll keep promoting her sport to girls around the country.
