Mark Chesnutt Remembers Late Country Legend and Friend: ‘In a League of His Own’

Country star Mark Chesnutt is remembering an old friend and fellow singer with a story that perfectly captures one of the things that made him unforgettable.

John Anderson, the Country Music Hall of Famer known for hits including “Swingin’,” “Straight Tequila Night” and “Seminole Wind,” died peacefully in his sleep at his Tennessee home on Oct. 21. He was 71.

In a heartfelt Facebook tribute following Anderson’s death, Chesnutt revealed that the two country singers bonded over something they loved doing away from the stage: hunting.

“I got to spend time with John Anderson doing things that he and I both loved. Hunting, of course!” Chesnutt wrote.

Apparently, Anderson wasn’t difficult to find when they were out together.

“I could hear him coming a mile away with his big burly voice,” Chesnutt continued. “He was in a league of his own. Please keep his family in your prayers. I will miss you, big John!”

Anderson’s unmistakable voice was one of the defining features of a career that stretched across nearly five decades.

Born in Florida in 1954, Anderson moved to Nashville as a teenager and broke through as a recording artist in the late 1970s. His run of country hits included “Wild and Blue,” “Black Sheep” and “Swingin’,” which earned him the CMA Award for Single of the Year in 1983.

Anderson experienced another major career surge in the early 1990s with songs including “Straight Tequila Night,” “Seminole Wind” and “Money in the Bank.” He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

Chesnutt, meanwhile, became one of the defining traditional country voices of the 1990s, scoring hits including “Too Cold at Home,” “Brother Jukebox,” “Bubba Shot the Jukebox,” “I’ll Think of Something” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”

Fans responding to Chesnutt’s tribute immediately understood what he meant about Anderson being “in a league of his own.”

“Never was anyone like John and there never will be,” one fan wrote, adding that Anderson’s “unique voice can never be matched.”

For others, the news brought back memories of discovering Anderson’s music as children.

“I was a kid playing ‘Chicken Truck’ on my dad’s stereo,” one person recalled. “He left us a catalog of great songs for us to carry on.”

Another fan said hearing Anderson’s name immediately brought “Swingin’” to mind, along with memories of growing up on a dirt road in Texas while their parents played records in the living room.

“We lost another one of our old radio heros,” the fan wrote. “Not many are left.”

That sense of losing another irreplaceable voice appeared repeatedly among the responses.

“It still stings knowing he just passed,” another person wrote. “All the great ones are leaving us! Another pair of shoes that nobody can fill.”

But as another fan pointed out, Anderson left behind something that will last much longer than any radio era.

“We’ll all miss John Anderson but his music and legacy will live on,” the fan wrote. “He gave us a gift of timeless country music through his songwriting and unique voice.”
