Actor Sebastian Stan revealed he feels an almost uncanny connection to his MCU character, Bucky Barnes, AKA The Winter Soldier.
In an October 2026 interview with GQ, Stan described Bucky, whom he has played in several MCU films and the 2021 miniseries Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as his “doppelganger.”
“It’s bizarre. It’s kind of like having a doppelganger or a weird, estranged brother that you never knew you had, you know?” explained the actor.
He went on to say that he believes he and Bucky have changed at the same rate.
“We go away for a number of time, you know, and then we come back to each other. It’s very funny, and it feels like we’re always growing together or something, but it’s been good. It’s evolved because I’ve evolved, so the character’s evolved with me in a way,” said Stan while speaking to GQ.
Sebastian Stan Believes There Is More to Bucky’s Story
During the GQ interview, Stan shared that he has had more “input” into Bucky’s characterization and storyline since filming Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
“I think in the last couple years, particularly when we were doing the show, that’s kind of when I started to feel like I was getting asked quite a bit, my input,” said Stan.
In an October 2026 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stan revealed that he’s not ready for Bucky’s story to end. He explained that he has a deep appreciation for the MCU movies where Bucky had a significant role.
“I loved the films that I was in. I mean, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, it was an unbelievable time. And so, I’m biased, I guess. Or I’m so protective of it in a way, but I do feel like the evolution of the character was right,” said Stan. “I don’t think it should have gone differently than it did. I never have any idea about what it is that they want to do, but I still feel that there’s something about this character that hasn’t totally yet been completed and I think they know.”
Stan will appear as Bucky in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, out on December 18.
