The Royals have sent five right-handed pitchers outright to Triple-A Omaha, according to the MLB.com transactions tracker. They are Alex Lange, Mason Black, Connor Seabold, Alec Marsh and Easton McGee. This indicates the club put the five of them on waivers recently and they all went unclaimed. Seabold and McGee have elected free agency. Marsh and Lange are also eligible to choose the open market and will presumably do so.
This part of the calendar is a big time for roster moves of this nature. After the World Series, eligible players become free agents but also the injured list goes away. Most teams have a handful of players on the 60-day IL who either need to be reinstated to the 40-man or bumped off. Players eligible for the Rule 5 draft also need roster spots in November if the club wants to protect them from selection. With all those moving parts, many fringe players will be squeezed off roster spots in the coming weeks.
Seabold, 31 in January, was acquired from the Blue Jays in a June trade. That didn’t work out for the Royals. Seabold allowed five earned runs in five innings before hitting the IL with a lat strain. He started a rehab assignment in September but was still on the IL at season’s end. He has a previous career outright, which gave him the right to elect free agency this time.
McGee, 29 in December, was acquired from the Brewers in a July trade. Kansas City shuttled him between Triple-A and the majors the rest of the way. At the big league level, he tossed 9 1/3 innings, allowing nine earned runs. Like Seabold, he has a previous career outright, which gave him the right to elect free agency.
Lange, 31, was signed as a free agent in November of last year. He had some good seasons with the Tigers but Detroit cut him loose after shoulder surgery wiped out most of his 2024 and 2025 seasons. The Royals were looking for a bounceback but didn’t get it. Lange tossed 60 innings for Kansas City this year but with a grisly 6.75 earned run average. Since he has at least three years of service time, he has the right to elect free agency.
Marsh, 29 in May, has spent his entire professional career with the Royals thus far. Kansas City drafted him in 2019. He gave them 203 1/3 innings with a 4.96 ERA over the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He has unfortunately not been a factor since then. Shoulder issues kept him on the injured list throughout 2025 and he eventually underwent labrum surgery in November of that year. He spent all of 2026 rehabbing and hasn’t pitched in official game action in two years. Like Lange, he has at least three years of service and is eligible for free agency.
Black, 27 in December, was acquired from the Giants in a trade in November of last year. The Royals shuttled him between Triple-A and the big leagues this year. He logged 31 1/3 innings in the majors with a 4.31 ERA but was lucky that number wasn’t higher. He only struck out 13.4% of batters faced and actually gave out walks at a higher clip of 14.1%. The ERA would have been higher if not for a fortunate .253 batting average on balls in play and 82.6% strand rate. His 6.48 FIP and 5.82 SIERA suggest he deserved far worse.
Unlike the others, Black does not have the right to elect free agency. This is his first career outright and his service clock is under three years. He also isn’t eligible for seven-year minor league free agency because he has only participated in five minor league seasons.
The Royals can keep him in a non-roster capacity and try to get him back on track. He was one of the top ten prospects in the Giants’ system a few years ago. Over 2022 and 2023, he threw 235 2/3 innings in the minors with a 3.48 ERA, 29.8% strikeout rate and 9% walk rate. But in 265 2/3 minor league innings since then, he has a 5.45 ERA, 21.5% strikeout rate and 10.4% walk rate. He has a 5.53 ERA in his big league career.
