ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe Community College’s optics program is getting more than $5.3 million in federal funding to expand training and apprenticeship opportunities.
The multi-year grant is included in this fiscal year’s Defense Appropriations Bill. The goal is to support the pipeline of talent to Rochester optics and photonics companies, which could help to support national security operations. MCC’s optics program also secured a $5.1 million grant from the Department of Defense in 2023 to fund the program through 2026.
With this latest round of funding, MCC is aiming to strengthen its program to prepare students to work at local employers in the optics, photonics, and semiconductor industries. MCC is the nation’s first community college to administer associate degrees in precision optics.
