Before the Bears and Patriots kick off tonight, a fun read from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on the people around Caleb Williams in Chicago. A lot of them are among the biggest names in the city.
Williams, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Matas Buzelis share a group chat full of memes, encouragement, and one-upmanship. In person, it’s bonfires at Cole Bennett’s place, bowling, or front-row seats at each other’s games. “I obviously want to be here forever,” Williams told Cronin. Bears fans have waited a long time to hear a quarterback say that.
Some highlights from Cronin’s story:
Ice bath viewing party: Buzelis watched the Packers playoff comeback from a cold tub at the United Center after a Bulls game. Across town, PCA was in a Soldier Field suite and says he nearly hit the ceiling on the fourth-and-8 throw to Rome Odunze. That jump pass ended up on the cover of Madden NFL 27. Bedard’s last-minute jersey: Connor Bedard wanted to wear a Williams jersey to a Blackhawks game the night before the Bears’ divisional round matchup with the Rams. Shipping wasn’t going to get it there in time, so he had it DoorDashed. Williams returned the favor by wearing Bedard’s No. 98 to a Hawks game after the season. Front row at Wrigley: During the Bears’ four days off after training camp, Williams fought Chicago traffic to get to Wrigley. The group gave up their suite seats to sit up front and saw PCA hit his 39th homer of the year against the Brewers. Then Buzelis started a “P-C-A” chant, and Williams and the crew joined in, banging on the top of the dugout. Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson, left, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, center, and Cole Bennett, right, cheer on the Chicago Cubs. Incognito at Kanye: The next night, Williams went to Kanye West’s homecoming show at Soldier Field. Bennett told him that if he wanted to watch from the floor instead of a suite, he had to go full disguise. So Williams wore a black ski mask and sunglasses, and according to Bennett, nobody recognized him in a crowd of about 71,000. Cronin’s full story at ESPN has a lot more, including great quotes from PCA, Buzelis, and Bennett about what a night out with Williams is like. — Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) October 22, 2026 Tonight’s the Patriots, which means you’ll hear about the nine sacks. A lot. Fair enough, since that 2024 game was rock bottom. But it’s wild how little of that version of the Bears is left—the coaches, the offense, the vibes. Pretty much the only thing that made it through was Caleb, and he looks like a completely different quarterback now. Both teams were in on each other’s head coach that winter. The Bears talked to Vrabel and the Patriots asked about Johnson, and both hires worked out. New England got to the Super Bowl first, so they’re the bar right now. If the Bears win tonight, they’re right there in that conversation with them. I wrote more on all of it, including Caleb vs. Maye and what Ben Johnson did to keep things afloat while Williams was out, in my preview. — PFF (@PFF) October 22, 2026 The Chicago Bears will honor legendary player and coach Mike Ditka tonight during their Thursday night contest with the New England Patriots. Fitting, because Ditka’s Bears walloped the Patriots in Super Bowl XX, the franchise’s last Super Bowl title.
