The Chicago Bears will play their first home game since the death of Mike Ditka on Thursday, and they’re unveiling tributes to the iconic coach and tight end.
Ditka passed away on October 9 at the age of 86, and the team has been putting together a series of tributes to “Iron Mike” ahead of their Thursday night game against the New England Patriots.
Appropriately, the Patriots were the team the Bears defeated in Super Bowl XX in New Orleans in 1986, with Ditka patrolling the sidelines in his iconic Bears sweater.
Now on Thursday the Bears will honor Ditka with a series of tributes, including a new stencil on their home sideline honoring the legendary tight end and coach:
The No. 89 was retired by the Bears in 2013, and was taken out of circulation by the team in honor of a player who revolutionized the tight end position in the NFL. The Bears are also wearing No. 89 patches on their jerseys to honor Ditka’s legacy.
As for other tributes during the game, the Bears are planning a pregame moment of silence for Ditka, as well as a collection of Ditka-related memorabilia that will be on display on the south end of Soldier Field during the game.
Fans will also be given souvenir Ditka mustaches in celebration of his legacy, and the first 10,000 fans to arrive at Soldier Field on Thursday will receive headbands styled after his iconic sweater, the team said.
