Chicago Cubs Pitching Prospect Dominick Reid Turning Some Heads in Arizona

It wouldn’t be October without a Chicago Cubs prospect putting together a strong showing out in the Arizona Fall League. Maybe it’s just a matter of probabilities, but it seems like, every year, there’s a Cubs prospect who is wowing folks if the AFL – Owen Ayers, Jonathon Long, James Triantos, Caleb Kilian, Nelson Velazquez, Riley Martin, Matt Mervis … on and on, even going back to the days of Kris Bryant back in 2013.

Now, let’s be clear: as we’ve seen, huge performances in the AFL don’t always translate to future roles in the big leagues. You can’t make any proclamations on the basis of a small-sample after-season league.

But it’s still pretty fun to see how well some Cubs prospects do out in Arizona, and, in most cases, it at least teed the guys up to be followed more closely the following year.

This year for the Cubs, pitching prospect Dominick Reid is turning heads:

Dominick Reid is tearing up the AFL: 12.0 IP | 1.50 ERA | 0.92 WHIP 34.1% K% | 12.2% BB% | .171 BAA He’s working with six different offerings now, each generating elite extension and have combined for a 35.5% whiff rate. One to watch heading into 2027. t.co/XNzn7JCsSt

Dominick Reid showed up to the Arizona Fall League with a six-pitch mix. And early returns have yielded positive returns for the #Cubs’ 2025 third-rounder: t.co/w60fkI4UoT t.co/4FlcxCeOco

Dominick Reid, 22, was the Cubs’ third rounder last year, and was making his professional debut this season. He pitched well enough at Low-A to get the bump to High-A, but a shoulder impingement limited him to just one (really good) start at High-A South Bend. Thus the trip out to Arizona to get in some more innings.

Reid dominated in college largely on the strength of an elite changeup, which is a great weapon to have, but one that wouldn’t be enough to carry him all the way up to the big leagues. So Reid worked hard on adding another pitch this year. And then another. And then another.

According to the MLB Pipeline piece, Reid is now up to SIX offerings (four-seamer, sinker, cutter, curveball, sweeper, changeup). It’s a really ambitious approach for a new professional, but I also think if he’s game for it, the approach might make a lot of sense. Get him working on lots of different pitch types early on, see what he can get a good in-game feel for, and then maybe shave a couple off in Spring Training so he can really focus on his best three or four.

Another reasons Dominick Reid probably benefits from a diverse arsenal more than most, he doesn’t have premium velocity on the fastball (typically sitting around 93/94 mph). That doesn’t mean it can’t be a good pitch, mind you – apparently he has a low release height and great extension, both of which will make the pitch play up from its radar-gun number. But if you’re maybe looking at a guy with an average overall fastball down the road, then you can help it play up even more if he’s got three other average or better offerings. I just really like the sound of the work he’s doing this offseason, and you can read about it more here.

It’s way too early to make any proclamations about Reid’s timeline or future contributions in the big leagues. Let’s see how he does in 2027 in a return to High-A (presumably), and if he gets the bump to Double-A at some point during the year, then you perhaps start dreaming on 2028+. Lord knows the Cubs need a lot of guys like Reid to break out over the next couple years.

Some of Reid’s thoughts on his AFL experience thus far:
