Playoff Odds Update, New Power Rankings, and Other Bears Bullets

The Bears and Cubs are the two teams I care most about.

So it grabbed my attention seeing colleague Michael Cerami at BN Cubs take an interesting angle and write about how the Northsiders have whittled away much of the goodwill that was built by winning the 2016 World Series. But to call it a “decade of near-futility” struck a chord with me. This is our 10th season covering the Bears and the NFL on this site. And it is an absolute miss to call what’s happened with the Cubs over the last decade “futile” when you’ve been sitting in my chair for as long as I have covering the Bears.

You want futile? I’ll show you futile. We can start with having more 10+ loss seasons (5) than seasons at .500 or better (4) since 2017. Have the Cubs had anything like the Cody Parkey double-doink and subsequent TODAY Show appearance incident since 2017? Is there anything like what we experienced with The Bears Fan Civil War of 2024? And don’t even get me started on the stadium nonsense. Remember when the Bears were forced to cancel practice for a rules violation? The entire Matt Eberflus era was an embarrassment that culminated in literally ruining Thanksgiving. How many holidays have the Cubs ruined, Michael?

It goes deeper than that, though. Do you remember the Halas Hall sushi incident? What about passing on Patrick Mahomes to draft Mitch Trubisky while also setting a new standard for organizational incompetence in the quarterback evaluation process? Ex-players eviscerating ownership and shining a light on the organizational shortcomings were plenty. Teammates reportedly argued because one player was apparently trying to pursue a teammate’s girlfriend. And it was enough to get someone cut.

Let me be clear. There is no denying that Cubs fans deserve more and should demand more from the front office and ownership. The time is now to hold everyone’s feet to the fire at Clark and Addison. But save for commiserating over the common ground of failed draft choices over the last 10 years, the pre-Ben Johnson Bears were a picture of organizational futility that should put things in perspective for others.

Anyway, let’s move on to the rest of Bears Bullets…

This is what the NFL playoff picture looks like going into Week 7:

    49ers take the 1-seed in the NFC ? t.co/nnnIRexyKv

    — PFF (@PFF) October 20, 2026 If the season ended today (it doesn’t), the entire NFC North would be in the playoffs. The divisional games from here on out are going to be a slugfest. So, hopefully, the Bears will take care of business against their AFC foes and the NFC teams that are not in their division. A look at where the Bears check in on the power rankings heading into Week 6: 6th (FOX Sports), 8th (The Athletic), 9th (ESPN), 10th (PFT), 11th (NFL Media), 13th (CBS Sports). Remember when Bears fans were in “the sky is falling territory” at this time last week? Fun times! I’m taking an updated look at The Athletic’s Playoff Simulator this season as I’m typing this out. As of this posting, the Bears have a 71 percent chance (up from 57 percent) of making the postseason. Their most likely path (as of now) is via the Wild Card, which sits at a 48 percent probability (up from 38 percent) heading into Week 7. They also have 14 percent odds to host a game on wild-card weekend, which is what it was at last week. Their odds of landing the No. 1 seed are up from 5 percent to 7 percent. A win against the Pats would boost their playoff odds to 79 percent. But a loss will drop them to 62 percent. ESPN’s NFL FPI gives Chicago’s football team the following odds: 78.8%: Make the playoffs (up from 64.1%) 22.1%: Chance to win the NFC North (up from 16.5%) 47.4%: Reach the divisional round (up from 37.1%) 24.3%: Go to the NFC Championship Game (up from 17.2%) 11.6%: Make the Super Bowl (up from 7.3%) 5.8%: Win the Super Bowl (up from 3.6%) Caleb Williams comes back and things start looking up again! Oct 18, 2026; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) rolls out to throw the ball during the first quarter against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images Sean Hammond (Tribune) writes about how Williams just played his most efficient game as a pro. Will it carry over in a crucial stretch that includes back-to-back games against the last two Super Bowl participants and a Sunday Night Football affair against the Bucs is a question I look forward to seeing answered. Over at the Sun-Times, Jason Lieser writes about how New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel has put an offseason scandal and early-season struggles behind him to get the team back on track. I still don’t think the Vrabel storyline with Dianna Russini is over. Heck, still haven’t heard her side of the story. Hence, it’s hard for me to accept that this incident is behind him when so much is still unknown. Just because people stop talking about the elephant in the room doesn’t mean that the elephant isn’t still there.
