Cubs Assistant Hitting Coach John Mallee Reportedly Drawing Interest

The Chicago Cubs aren’t expected to have much of a shakeup on their coaching staff this offseason, and we’ve already heard that the pitching coaches will likely stay in place.

But the decision to bring the band back isn’t always entirely up to you. From Anthony DiComo:

“Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee is on the Mets’ list of interviewees for their coaching staff vacancy, according to an industry source. He joins a list of publicly known candidates that also includes Kevin Long, as the New York Post reported earlier this week ….

The Mets, who tied for 20th in runs (699), dismissed director of hitting Jeff Albert after the season, but the club retained hitting coach Troy Snitker and assistant Rafael Fernandez. At the outset of New York’s search to replace Albert, a source said the team was unsure if it would hire a new hitting director over Snitker or another assistant beneath him.”

    And from Jesse Rogers:

Mets interest in Cubs hitting coach John Mallee heating up as @AnthonyDiComo reported today. Helped preside over a top 5 offense the last couple of years. Worked closely with PCA leading to his MVP caliber season. Had Kris Bryant a decade ago who also won an MVP.

Suffice to say, losing John Mallee would be a blow to the coaching staff. He seems to get on well with the positional group and help bring along the young hitters. Recall the story of how much of an impact he’s had on Pete Crow-Armstrong, and the credit PCA gave to Mallee as part of his big breakout this year.

That said, it can be hard to keep a good hitting coach in an assistant role for too long, so I always wondered when he might get another opportunity. We’ll just have to see how this interview cycle plays out.

John Mallee’s time with the Cubs started back in 2014 as the big league team’s hitting coach. After a few years, he was let go, and spent time as a hitting coach with the Phillies and Angels. He then returned to the Cubs organization in 2023 as the Iowa Cubs hitting coach, before getting the bump back up to the big league team as the assistant hitting coach for the last few seasons.
