More than 200 live cockroaches and black slime dripping on ice were among the findings by city health inspectors at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s cafeteria and patient kitchen.
The cafeteria and kitchen failed the inspection, and the hospital has since said it’s working to address the issues.
Cockroaches were found throughout the food preparation area, including the grill, deep fryer and various storage spaces.
The discovery has raised concerns among family members of patients at the Lakeview hospital.
Multiple images of the closed cafeteria were sent anonymously to NBC Chicago by a person who described themselves as a concerned citizen.
The Chicago Department of Public Health confirmed through a report that it suspended the hospital’s cafeteria license on Friday “for a failed inspection due to a roach infestation.”
Alina, who asked that her face not be shown, said her mother has been a patient at the hospital for the past eight days – and was there on Saturday morning.
“The lady on the admission desk, she asked me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because you have to tell them where are you going,” she recalled. “And I said, ‘I’m going to take my coffee, and she said, ‘The cafeteria is closed.’ And I was like, ‘I never been over the weekend.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God! I didn’t know that you guys are closed over the weekend.’ And she said, ‘Generally, we are not closed, but they are doing some remodeling.’
Alina’s nephew later told her about the failed inspection and the live cockroaches discovered in the food preparation area.
“How were you feeling about that when your nephew told you that?” NBC Chicago’s Christian Farr asked.
“I felt concern,” Alina said. “I felt concern, but like I said, in the meantime, it didn’t impact in any way the trust that I have on the medical care.”
Advocate Illinois Masonic officials said they are working on safely resuming kitchen operations and added that “patients continue to receive meals without interruption, with alternative food preparation and meal service arrangements in place.”
“You still feel comfortable with your mother’s care here?” Farr asked.
“Oh yeah, definitely,” she said. “I wouldn’t move mom to another hospital for nothing in the world.”
