Five adults were found dead inside a home in north suburban Mundelein following a welfare check, police said, with a death investigation underway and yellow police tape surrounding the area.
About 11:45 p.m., the Mundelein Police Department responded to a well-being check at a home in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue. When officers entered the home, they found three men and two women dead inside.
All five adults appeared to have died as the result of gunshot wounds, the Lake County Coroner’s Office said. Two handguns were found at the scene.
Authorities said the adults appeared to be family members or in a domestic relationship.
Video and photos captured at the scene overnight showed officers and other law enforcement officials walking in and out of the home at the corner of Prairie and Wellington avenues. Mundelein police vehicles could be seen, along with evidence technicians from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the major crimes task force responds to a number of incidents, including homicides, suspicious deaths, in-custody deaths, officer-involved shootings and “heinous crimes” within Lake County communities.
The incident appeared to be isolated, police said, and there is no threat to the public.
Early Monday morning, police could be seen blocking off the home and a car parked in a lot nearby.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mundelein Police Department, The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
Autopsies were scheduled for Monday afternoon, the coroner’s office said.
