Affordable housing proposals top the agendas this week in local government. The Carrboro Town Council will consider a proposal from Orange Habitat to build 85 townhomes along Rogers Road, while Orange County Commissioners and the Chapel Hill Town Council meet jointly to discuss a proposal for 10 affordable units – and a new church – on Old Lystra Road. And the Chapel Hill Town Council has one more big agenda item this week too: another public hearing on the Land Use Management Ordinance, or LUMO. The draft hasn’t been finalized yet, but that date is getting closer: the Town Council is slated to take a vote in November.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 20. Their agenda includes a public hearing on Orange Habitat’s proposal to build 86 affordable townhomes on the west side of Rogers Road. Council members will also discuss town rules regarding short-term rentals like Airbnbs, after residents on Alabama Avenue objected to a developer’s plan to build two short-term rental units in their neighborhood. Orange County Commissioners meet jointly with the Chapel Hill Town Council Tuesday, October 20, at 6 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. There’s one item on the agenda: the two boards will discuss a proposal from Holy Trinity Anglican Church to rezone 15.5 acres on Old Lystra Road to build a new church and up to 10 affordable housing units.
After that, Orange County Commissioners will reconvene for their own meeting at 7 p.m., to vote on that proposal and get a report on the local impact of federal- and state-level SNAP funding cuts. Click here for links to both agendas.
The Chapel Hill Town Council also has its own meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 21. They’ll also vote on the Holy Trinity proposal, but the bulk of the meeting will likely be a public hearing on the latest draft of a new Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO). Town staff are still in the process of tweaking the draft; the council isn’t slated to vote on a final version until November. Click here for Wednesday’s agenda.
Both of Orange County’s school boards also meet this week. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board has its fall retreat on October 21-22, and the Orange County school board meets Monday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building, with an agenda that includes a safety update and new data on students and staff from the beginning of the school year. Get the Orange County School Board’s agenda at this link.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, October 19 – beginning with a 2 p.m. work session that includes a budget update, and continuing at 6 p.m. with a regular meeting that includes a pair of public hearings on development rules. Click here for the board’s full agenda.
Finally, the Durham City Council meets twice this week, at 7 p.m. Monday, October 19, and again at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 22. Click here for links to both agendas, which include a presentation at Thursday’s meeting on the state of the Durham Housing Authority.
