NEW YORK — Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that quadruples the state tax credit for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers on Saturday.
The tax credit has been raised from $200 to $800 for individuals and from $400 to $1,600 for married couples. The expanded credit will be available starting in tax year 2027; it allows those eligible to claim benefits when filing taxes in 2028.
“Keeping New York safe and affordable is my highest priority. Today, I’m proud to sign into law a bill that recognizes the sacrifices that all volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers make,” Governor Hochul said. “These brave New Yorkers put their lives on the line to protect their neighbors, often sacrificing time with their families and loved ones. This tax credit puts more money back in their pockets and shows our appreciation for the lifesaving services they provide every day.”
According to state law, eligible volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers can claim an increased state income tax credit or a qualifying local property tax exemption.
Chili Fire Department Chief Michael Lopez gave a statement about the signed legislation, saying:
“On behalf of the members of the Chili Fire Department, and the volunteer firefighters and EMTs servingcommunities across New York State, I want to thank Governor Kathy Hochul for signing legislation todaythat quadruples the state tax credit for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.
“For nearly two decades, that credit sat at $200 while everything else changed. Training requirements grew, call volumes grew, and the cost of living grew. Our volunteers kept answering the call anyway, at 3 a.m., on holidays, and in the middle of family dinners. Raising the credit to $800 is a real, meaningfulacknowledgment of that commitment.
“We are grateful to Senator Monica Martinez and Assemblywoman Karen McMahon for sponsoring this bill and seeing it through, and to our own Assemblyman Harry Bronson and Senator Pam Helming forsupporting it. We also thank Senator Pamela Helming and Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey, who stood with us at the Chili Fire Department this summer to call for its passage. Thank you as well to FASNY and toevery firefighter, EMT, and advocate who made calls, wrote letters, and kept pushing.
“Volunteers protect the vast majority of New York’s communities, and recruiting and keeping them hasnever been harder. Today’s action tells the people who give their time to protect their neighbors that NewYork sees them and values them. We hope it encourages more New Yorkers to join us.”
