Fleetwood Mac Crowned ‘As Talented as Any Band’ After Beating Led Zeppelin on Best Bands of All Time List

Is Fleetwood Mac more talented than Led Zeppelin?

A new ranking of the best bands of all time is making a provocative case for the famously turbulent group, placing Fleetwood Mac ahead of Led Zeppelin while declaring the band “as talented as any” of its legendary competition.

Fleetwood Mac landed at No. 8 on Consequence’s new ranking of the 100 Best Bands of All Time, which was shaped with input from more than 70 artists before being rounded out and curated by the publication’s staff.

That put Fleetwood Mac directly ahead of Nirvana at No. 9 and Led Zeppelin at No. 10.

And if rock fans think putting Fleetwood Mac ahead of Led Zeppelin is a bold choice, Consequence isn’t the only major publication to rank the band surprisingly high.

In 2025, Billboard named Fleetwood Mac the No. 6 greatest rock band of all time. Only The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen finished ahead of them. In other words, two major rankings in two years have now placed Fleetwood Mac firmly among rock’s elite.

The musicians and writers contributing to Consequence’s latest ranking made the case for why.

Brandi Carlile pointed to the very thing that could have destroyed Fleetwood Mac: the complicated relationships among its members.

“That is a complicated love affair of profound songwriters and their ability to overcome what made them different to make one of the most cohesive and powerful bands of all time,” Carlile said.

Danny Rocco, who performs as Des Rocs, similarly argued that Fleetwood Mac’s turbulent history was an essential part of what made the group extraordinary.

“Fleetwood Mac reminds us of the pathos of what it means to be in a band,” Rocco said. “Their relentless talent and spirit is iconic.”

But perhaps the boldest assessment came from Consequence managing editor Wren Graves, who challenged readers to identify the most talented member of a group that has included Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.

“Who is Fleetwood Mac’s best instrumentalist? The best singer? The best songwriter?” Graves asked. “None of these questions can be answered without a fight.”

Graves then offered an assessment likely to inspire a few arguments of its own.

“Pound for pound, Fleetwood Mac is as talented as any band on this list,” he wrote.

Considering the list includes The Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Who and dozens of other giants of rock history, that’s quite a declaration. But Fleetwood Mac has the commercial success to bolster the argument.

Billboard noted in its 2025 ranking that the British-American band scored four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and nine Top 10 hits on the Hot 100.

The band’s defining album, 1977’s Rumours, turned its members’ famously messy personal lives into music history. The Album of the Year Grammy winner has sold 40 million copies and includes “Go Your Own Way,” “The Chain,” “You Make Loving Fun” and “Dreams.”

“Dreams” became Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 hit on the Hot 100, but its story didn’t end in the 1970s. The song returned to the chart in 2020 after a viral TikTok video introduced it to another generation.

Billboard argued that Fleetwood Mac’s romantic turmoil wasn’t merely gossip surrounding the music. Instead, it became “the creative juice” behind the band’s enormous success. Consequence reached a similar conclusion about the tension that might have destroyed a less talented group.

“So what if it set their relationships with each other on fire?” Graves wrote. “Fleetwood Mac burned all the brighter for it.”

Whether Fleetwood Mac really belongs ahead of Led Zeppelin is the kind of question rock fans could probably argue about forever.

But with Consequence putting the band at No. 8 and Billboard ranking it even higher at No. 6, Fleetwood Mac keeps landing remarkably close to the top.
