While appearing on The Tom & Mickey Show, Drugstore Cowboy actress Brenda Vaccaro revealed the reason why she broke off her engagement to her Summertree costar, Michael Douglass. Vaccaro, who was engaged to Douglass in the 1970s, changed her mind about their wedding because she “fell in love with somebody else, and I knew it,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
Vaccaro recalled how things were already strained between the couple before they decided to tie the knot—Douglas was often away filming the ABC crime drama The Streets of San Francisco, in Northern California. Vaccaro’s “life was changing” too. She was a rising star, having made a transition from Broadway star to on screen darling.
Despite their struggles, the couple had a “hippie wedding” in their agent’s backyard. “We got married, with words and love, and there was no priest,” Vaccaro explained. They exchanged leather rings and “decided to be together forever.” However, Douglas’ father, Kirk Douglas, encouraged the former couple to have a glitzier Hollywood wedding.
“And so I felt the pressure to do it,” Vaccaro confessed. “Pressure, not love.”
Vaccaro eventually decided to leave Douglas for her The House by the Lake costar Don Stroud. “The provocative thing was that the [wedding] invitations were being printed and there were 175 people I think,” Vaccaro recalled.
Douglas has a different recollection of how their relationship ended. In his memoir One Helluva Ride, which released earlier this month, he recalled hearing Vaccaro on the phone “sweet talking” Stroud, prompting him to call it quits.
“I packed up and moved out,” Douglas wrote. “I walked out to my car, holding back tears.”
Douglas wrote that he later heard that Vaccaro “regretted ending our relationship” for Stroud.
Vaccaro married twice after the end of her relationship with Douglas. Both marriages were brief. She married now-husband Guy Hector in 1986.
Douglas married Diandra Luker in 1977, People reported. They welcomed a son, Cameron, in December of the following year. They separated in 1995 and finalized their divorce in 2000. Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones later that year. The couple has two children.
