Ben Affleck Ignored Bruce Willis’ Advice About an Oscar-Winning Movie

Ben Affleck is glad he didn’t listen to Bruce Willis’ advice about Shakespeare in Love.

While the actors were filming 1998’s Armageddon, Willis urged his younger co-star to avoid the period romantic comedy, Affleck recalled in a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Willis had not read the script, Affleck explained, making the recommendation less informed than it might have sounded coming from one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Affleck took the part anyway, playing Ned Alleyn, a successful stage actor who performs in Shakespeare’s plays at London’s Globe Theatre.

“He was like, ‘Man, don’t go do that Shakespeare movie, man. You don’t wanna do that movie,’” Affleck remembered. Looking back, he acknowledged Willis “was wrong about that one,” while making clear he did not believe the advice came from a bad place.

The actor also recalled Willis commenting on his naturally high voice. When Affleck questioned how he could change something so fundamental, Willis reportedly insisted he was trying to help. Affleck described his Armageddon co-star as “the sweetest guy in the world” and said he still loved him.

‘Shakespeare in Love’ Became an Awards-Season Hit

Released in December 1998, Shakespeare in Love imagined a young William Shakespeare, played by Joseph Fiennes, falling for Viola de Lesseps, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow, as he works on Romeo and Juliet. The ensemble also included Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth.

The film became a major commercial success, earning about $289 million worldwide against a reported $25 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It also made a lasting mark at the 1999 Academy Awards, collecting seven wins from 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Paltrow and Best Supporting Actress for Dench.

Its victory over Saving Private Ryan in the Best Picture race remains one of the ceremony’s most discussed outcomes. For Affleck, however, the film’s success also makes Willis’ warning a memorable example of how even well-meaning advice can miss the mark. Sometimes, taking a chance on a project is the move that changes a career.

Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard also won for the film’s original screenplay.
