Boston Blue just shocked viewers with an unexpected split — but what does that mean for the future of the show?
During the Friday, October 16, episode of the CBS series, Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Brian (Ryan Broussard) didn’t see eye to eye on his return to the field. Lena wanted Brian to address his PTSD, but he wanted to get back to work as quickly as possible.
By the end of the episode, Lena and Brian realized they needed to take a break — especially after he accepted a job in another state.
“I think that it’s going to be a hit to a lot of people,” Martin-Green, 41, exclusively told Us. “I — like Ryan — agree that the story is what’s most important, right? And so we want to service the story and we want to service these characters and we want to service this relationship.”

Martin-Green urged fans to see the biggest picture, adding, “Between these two people, I think that it definitely makes for a good story. I also think it’s going to make for some interesting twists and turns in the future as well because this breakup is going to have a ripple effect. I’m excited to see what that’s gonna look like and how people are gonna respond.”
Despite pressing pause on their relationship, Martin-Green didn’t rule out a future reconciliation.
Brendan Adam-Zwelling/CBS“It’s possible,” she hinted. “The door is always open.”
Martin-Green promised that the fallout from the breakup will be shown, saying, “There are always possibilities for interaction. The ripple affects that Brian taking the job in D.C. — that’s huge. That’s huge and we’re gonna see that. We’re gonna see it. We’re gonna see what those ripples look like.”
Earlier this month, Martin-Green hinted at Lena and Brian’s bumpy romance.
Which 'Boston Blue' Stars Are — And Aren't — Returning After Recast?
“It’s great because here you have these two people who — what a history they have with each other. They go from being partners for so long to then being in a romantic relationship to now climbing back to life together,” she noted. “They both went through these near death experiences days apart from each other and so what we find out is that over the course of the hiatus, Lena and Brian had a hiatus from work as well because they had to get better. They had to go to rehab. They were able to be a support system for each other in a brand new way.”
This will continue to be explored throughout season 2.
“Coming out of that is what makes what comes that much more hurtful and that much more challenging because they’ve seen each other at their worst,” she continued. “They saw each other at an even worse time than ever before. Their relationship was forged because of that and the trust deepened because of that. So now if something comes in that would seem to betray that trust, it’s going to be that much more painful.”
