Rarely Seen ‘Happy Days’ Spinoff Is Back on TV 45 Years Later

Happy Days was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1970s, and it spawned a long list of spinoffs, including Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy and Joanie Loves Chachi. But a nearly-forgotten Saturday morning cartoon was also part of the mix—and now it’s back on TV 45 years later.

The kiddie classic The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang is now part of the Situation Animation late-night programming block on MeTV Toons, airing on Sundays at 11pm/10c. The episodes “Bye Bye Blackbeard” and “Westward Whoa” are listed as the next two to air.

Produced by Hanna-Barbera, the animated series originally aired from November 1980 to November 1981 for 24 episodes. It featured the voices of Happy Days regulars Henry Winkler, Ron Howard, and Don Most as well as Frank Welker, Didi Conn and Family Affair alum Kathy Garver.

The premise of the animated series was nothing like the 1950s-set Happy Days sitcom that aired on ABC at the time. IMDB’s description says: “Arthur ‘The Fonz’ Fonzarelli, Richie Cunningham, and Ralph Malph find themselves lost in time with their new friend, Cupcake, an alien from the future.” In the series, the Happy Days gang try to get themselves back to 1957 Milwaukee.

Happy Days aired for 11 seasons, from 1974 to 1984. The hit series was so popular that the characters were featured on lunchboxes, toys, T-shirts, and more. A Saturday morning cartoon was just another way to capitalize on the show’s popularity, and series star Henry  Winkler was totally cool with it because he liked to keep busy.

“I always believed in the phrase ‘If you want something done, give it to a busy man,’” he once told Media Mikes. “I so enjoy the fact that I get to do my work every day, that sleep becomes irrelevant.”

The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang cartoon became a pathway for some of the stars to do more voice work. Winkler went on to voice roles in Clifford the Big Red Dog, Duck Dodgers, Rugrats and more, but it took some time.

Speaking with Westworld, the actor said, “It’s just such a very small world, but I love it. I have the best time.”

And in an interview with Jeff Dwoskin’s Classic Conversations, Most agreed that the animated series was a positive experience.

“The cartoon, it was a good, you know,” the Happy Days alum shared. “It was a good experience because to do a voice on a cartoon, I’d never done it, and then it kind of led to me doing… some of the same people were involved in another cartoon called Dungeons & Dragons. Then I did another one, Teen Wolf, and another cartoon after that. So  it was nice to experience a lot of different things.”
