SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) - During the ongoing Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) impacting thousands of customers across San Luis Obispo County, officials are reminding motorists to use extra caution at intersections where traffic signals are not working.

Officials are pointing out drivers must treat any dark traffic signal as a stop sign, meaning all approaching vehicles must come to a complete stop and proceed when it is safe.

The warning comes as power shutoffs have left traffic signals without electricity in several locations throughout the county, including on Highway 1 at the two entrances to Cuesta College where drivers are moving at a fast rate of speed.

"When you come across any intersection where the signal is dark, that you treat it as a stop sign, like it's a four-way stop," said Kevin Drabinski, Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs Chief.

Caltrans has been sharing the messaging through social media and electronic message boards along roadways throughout the county, including one in San Luis Obispo on northbound Highway 101 near the Prado Road offramp.

Officials point out the information being passed along today is especially important as the Central Coast heads into the winter months, when strong winds, heavy rain and flooding that may take place during the forecasted El Niño may potentially lead to additional power outages and traffic disruptions.

"It's just a good lesson for today and a good lesson for the future," said Drabinski. "When we experience wind or rain events this winter, which might turn the power off again as well. During power outages or during winter rain events, which we anticipate area coming, you're going to see a lot of public safety responders and Caltrans on the road during these events, so please slow down for those workers. Move over and away from them, slow down, and we can all get home safely."

Caltrans is also advising drivers to remain alert for changing road conditions and follow guidance from local officials as the power shutoff continues.

Thousands of homes and businesses across San Luis Obispo County are without electricity Friday as PG&E continues an ongoing Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) due to extreme fire weather conditions.

The shutoff was initiated because of a combination of soaring temperatures, high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation, creating an elevated risk of wildfires across the Central Coast.

According to the San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services (OES), approximately 8,700 customers were without power as of 10 a.m. Friday.

PG&E is estimating some areas will continue to be without power until Saturday evening.
