Prosecutors laid out horrific details after a woman was attacked by a suspect who attempted to drown her at Old Orchard Mall Tuesday.
According to authorities, the 67-year-old woman is still recovering from her injuries after the attack, which unfolded in broad daylight on Tuesday at the popular suburban mall.
Prosecutors say the woman was walking near a koi pond at the mall when the suspect in the case struck her in the head with a bag, knocking her to the ground.
The suspect then grabbed the woman’s head and shoved it underneath the surface of the koi pond, prosecutors said. The victim tried to kick and scratch at him, but he shoved her head back under the water, slamming it into the bottom of the pond.
As the woman struggled to breathe, multiple witnesses intervened to help her, according to prosecutors. One jumped into the pond and began screaming at the man to let her go, while another jumped into the pond and shoved the suspect off of the woman, who was eventually pulled from the water by bystanders.
The eyewitnesses to the brutal attack were able to keep the suspect from fleeing the scene, and he was taken into custody.
Surveillance video captured the entire attack, with prosecutors saying the suspect did not talk to the woman before attacking her. The victim told police she did not know the assailant, according to authorities.
That victim was taken to an area hospital, where she was diagnosed with a fractured L2 vertebrae in her back and a concussion, along with significant bruising to her face and underneath her arms, according to prosecutors.
The suspect, 36-year-old William Dobbs, is now facing charges of attempted murder, as well as aggravated battery of a victim older than 60 and aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm.
