Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre to perform fall dance concert

The Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre will perform their fall concert of choreography in ballet, jazz and tap from Oct.13-17 at the Dance Theatre in the English Building.

According to the Department of Theatre and Dance, the program highlights the artistry of its students while honoring a strong spirit of collaboration and expressive range.

“Our students have taken the time and notes from their choreographers or rehearsal directors, and now it’s up to them to just embody the movement, the emotions and bring it out for the patrons to see,” said Lyndell McDonald, artistic director of ARDT.

Mary Roberts, lecturer of dance at Troy University, said her performance called “For the Love of Shade” is a continuation from her previous work “One Shady Night” and is a concept of individual stories of the different dancers. The choreography includes advanced collegiate partner work to prove the point of bodies moving in motion to connect and create storytelling.

“One of the things I really work on with the dancers at a collegiate level is that everything I choreograph has educational value, and for dancers that want to go on Broadway, they’ve got to have strong partnering,” Roberts said.

Lindsay Renae Benton, an associate professor of dance at The University of Alabama said the choreography for her performance titled “Play the Game Receipts” incorporates Black vernacular movement and is influenced from Garth Fagan technique.

“Being able to see everything come together with all of the different elements, not just the choreography but the lights, costumes, hair and makeup,” Benton said. “It all comes together and makes a beautiful picture.”

Jamorris Rivers, assistant professor of dance and director of the MFA dance program, praised Maddie Truitt’s performance for her emotional presence with the choreography.

“Her overall commitment to character in that work because it’s such a powerful piece,” Rivers said. “She just embodies everything that work represents.”
