With the SEC season near the midpoint, surely we’ve figured it all out by now. Right? Right??
For everybody who didn’t foresee Kentucky having a 2-game record jump over Texas A&M at midseason, here’s your place.
Every week, we react to what happened and look ahead to try to see, based on the shape of the SEC world as it is, how the league’s teams will end up.
Post-Week 6, here’s the rundown on what we think each team’s final regular-season record will be:
Alabama (5-1, lost to Georgia 20-17): 10-2
Alabama does not move one iota off a tough loss to Georgia. Frankly, 11-1 might be more likely because those road trips to Tennessee and LSU, while challenging, aren’t exactly fear-inducing. Alabama is on a CFP path regardless and looks like one of the safer picks in the SEC.
Arkansas (2-4, lost to Tennessee 24-17): 2-10
Arkansas played well enough to get a 3-9 bump, but aside from Vanderbilt, there’s just not another team in the league that the Razorbacks seem capable of beating. That game’s in Nashville, so we’ll stick at 2-10.
Auburn (3-2, off): 5-7
Auburn didn’t see any real changes in the week off. The next 3 games being at Georgia, home vs. LSU, and at Ole Miss sets up for a likely 3-5 start. If that happens, the sixth win would hang on an upset at Mississippi State or Alabama. The Bulldogs would obviously be the more likely outcome, but with 4 tough road games and a home game against LSU, the prediction has to sit at 5-7.
Florida (4-2, lost to South Carolina 38-19): 7-5
Time to pump the brakes in a serious way on Florida with 2 straight weeks of poor defensive work. As we said a week ago, another bad performance would move us here. With Texas and Georgia up next, a 4-4 start is likely. From there, it’s not even certain to land at 6 wins. But Vandy and Florida State look easy enough and a home game against Oklahoma could be a potential seventh win. There’s plenty to like about this team, but the schedule caught up with it at a tough time.

Georgia doesn’t have a tough second half. The game at Ole Miss on November 7 is probably the toughest regular-season test left, with home vs. Missouri in that discussion too. But as consistent as Georgia has been, the prediction jumped this week. The thought is that Georgia keeps doing what it does, with a B- game from UGA being enough to hold off the second-best team in the league.
Kentucky (5-1, beat LSU 35-34): 8-4
Kentucky found a way to win from a situation where its program has historically found ways to lose. The Wildcats are rightfully getting CFP discussion, and the back end of the schedule makes that kind of talk fairly reasonable. The concerns for Kentucky are based on depth and again, a competitive slate. Road trips to Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Mizzou likely tell the story. Of the 3, Oklahoma is probably the best matchup and gives UK fans a shot to talk about 9-3 or even 10-2 if they’ve got another close win in the tank. Will Stein is an easy pick for SEC Coach of the Year.
LSU (4-2, lost to Kentucky 35-34): 7-5
LSU sees a real drop here. The games with Alabama and Texas are at home, but both look really challenging. Road trips to Auburn and Arkansas should be easy enough, but going to Knoxville could be interesting. An LSU team that could have back-to-back losses coming in to that game may be game for a loss to a Tennessee team that has the better CFP path of the 2 teams.
Mississippi State (4-1, off): 8-4
Mississippi State isn’t in much different shape than Kentucky. The ceiling remains high, but the week-to-week grind could be brutal. If the Bulldogs can win at LSU, they get some genuine CFP play. But losses at LSU and Texas look likely, with a home game against Oklahoma and the Egg Bowl both potential fourth losses. Again, a win at LSU shifts that narrative again.
Missouri (5-1, beat Texas A&M 27-6): 8-4
Mizzou is yet another of those CFP hopefuls, albeit one with probably the most challenging second-half schedule of the group. Ole Miss on the road this week is key, because a 7-1 Missouri team would move the needle heading into those back-to-back games with Texas and at Georgia. Home games with Kentucky and Oklahoma figure to be winnable but tough. The current thought would be 3 losses from that group, but if the Rebels can be taken down, up goes Mizzou.

Oklahoma grabbed the victory it had to have and definitely is a team that could show some massive shifts. The question is all on the offense. This team could literally go 4-8 or 9-3. The victory over Texas was a surprise, but Oklahoma still has to see a major offensive jump or the season will come down to the final weeks of November still hunting wins.
Ole Miss (4-1, beat Vanderbilt 52-17): 9-3
Ole Miss did nothing to hurt its path. The Rebels still go to Texas, they still host Georgia, and they look like the favorite in every other game on the schedule. This week’s home matchup with Missouri is definitely key as to which of those 2 teams gets the superior path to a CFP berth. Looks like the Rebels from here, but it’ll be interesting.
South Carolina (3-3, beat Florida 38-19): 6-6
South Carolina played like a team with its season on the line and now gets a week off. The path to the postseason is suddenly clear. Wins over Arkansas, A&M, and Clemson would do the job. Home games with Georgia and Tennessee look tough and at Oklahoma still looks like a swing game, but one that leans toward the Sooners.
Tennessee (5-1, beat Arkansas 24-17): 9-3
Tennessee gets a gut-check game against Alabama. That loss could spiral the Vols out of control. A road game at Carolina looks tough, and home games with Kentucky and LSU are still on the back end of the schedule. For the moment, the 9-3 mark stays, but the Vols figure to get some genuine battles down the November stretch run of the season.
Texas (4-1, lost to Oklahoma 27-24): 9-3
Texas took a seriously disappointing loss. The Longhorns still have to go to Missouri and LSU and have some challenging home games upcoming (Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State). The Longhorns are probably still a CFP team, but they look closer to the bubble than they did before Week 6.

Texas A&M (3-3, lost to Missouri 27-6): 5-7
Texas A&M may well not make it to 6 wins. The Citadel is an easy win, but from there, it gets dicey. The road game at Alabama and the home game with Texas both feel a bit out of reach. So calling for a sixth win is thinking A&M goes 2-1 against South Carolina and Oklahoma on the road and Tennessee at home. That seems a little too optimistic for the moment.
Vanderbilt (3-3, lost to Ole Miss 52-17): 4-8
Vanderbilt is at home for Arkansas and that’s about all the good there is to say here.
