Ben Affleck Recalls ‘Low Point’ While Filming ‘Justice League’ After Zack Snyder’s Exit

When it came to the creation of Zack Snyder‘s Justice League, Ben Affleck revealed issues in his personal life, and Snyder’s own turmoil led to it being a “low point” of his career.

The actor appeared on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused“ podcast to discuss the chaos that surrounded the filming of Justice League. At the time, Affleck, Jason Momoa, Henry Cavill, and other main stars were in the process of filming when Snyder left the project. This led to Joss Whedon taking over production with extensive reshoots.

“The truth is that the experience of Justice League, for me, was so so negative for lots of different reasons,” said Affleck. “Some of which having to do just with where I was personally, some of which having to do with some of the tragedy that happened during that time.”

Based on Affleck’s comments, he is likely referring to the death of Snyder’s 20-year-old daughter, Autumn. It was announced in March 2017 that Autumn had died by suicide, with Snyder and his family having initially kept her death private. The director first tried to return to working on the film as a way to cope, but made the decision to leave in May 2017.

The Gone Girl star adds that Snyder’s exit became much more than just the director needing to heal from the loss of his daughter, but felt the studio was against him.

“I really saw how not to make a movie like that, which is with the studio at odds with the filmmaker,” he explained. “You’re really making a mistake, and that was what really doomed that.”

Before Autumn’s death, reports claimed that Snyder was already clashing with Warner Bros. and was in disagreement over the film’s tone and creative direction. Leaving Justice League was Snyder’s decision, but studio tensions were already present.

“Somebody’s death by suicide, that that eclipses everything and then the way in which that, I thought, was frankly used as an excuse I just thought was one of the s—tiest things I’d ever seen,” said Affleck.

The actor added that it was a “s**tty” situation and the entire thing “was so gross” that it affected the environment on set. Alongside Snyder’s ordeal, Affleck was also going through his own issues. He was “drinking too much” at the time and had gotten divorced from Jennifer Garner. It was a “very difficult time for me personally.”

He does explain that while those things were “painful,” they didn’t impact the actual film. The actor had previously spoken about his experience on the film, stating he “wasn’t happy” and “didn’t like being there.”
