New Zealand unveil special ‘Kotahitanga’ ODI jersey to mark 100 years of sporting ties with India

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has unveiled a limited-edition “Kotahitanga” ODI shirt ahead of India’s upcoming tour. The jersey celebrates 100 years of sporting ties between Aotearoa and India, with artwork combining Māori patterns and Indian cultural motifs to reflect the shared history of the two nations.

India will tour New Zealand in October and November for five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests. The ODI series begins on November 4 and will help both sides assess their combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The hosts, led by Mitchell Santner, will wear the special kit during the 50-over series.

New Zealand Cricket announced the special jersey on social media, describing it as a tribute to the two countries’ shared sporting history and their connection through cricket.

“Introducing the limited-edition Kotahitanga ODI shirt. A celebration of two cultures bound by their love of cricket. To commemorate 100 years of sporting ties between Aotearoa and India,” NZC said in its post.

The sporting relationship between the countries dates back to 1926, when an Indian Army hockey team toured New Zealand. Their cricketing ties began in November 1955, when the visitors played the first of five Tests against India in Hyderabad.

Kotahitanga Jersey Combines Māori Patterns With Indian Art

The jersey was designed through a collaboration between artists Ben Thomason of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and Gujarat-based artists Shiv Narandas and Jai Pancha. Their work combines traditional Māori patterns with Indian architectural and artistic motifs.

New Zealand cricket explained the artists’ contributions in its statement:

“Artists Ben Thomason (Ngati Raukawa ki Te Tonga), Shiv Narandas (Gujarat), and Jai Pancha (Gujarat), collaborated on the shirt design which represents and intertwines both nation’s cultures,” said NZC in its statement.

“Thomason weaved Maori kowhaiwhai patterns over a background of haehae lines to connect the living with those who have passed, honour the people who built the bond between the nations, and celebrate what it means to players, fans and those behind the scenes.

“Narandas and Pancha used three Indian motifs as the unifying elements; the lotus – India’s national flower, a repeating ogee pattern drawn from Indian architecture, and the mandala to provide a symmetrical framework aligning naturally with Maori design systems.”

Mitchell Santner Leads Split ODI Squad Ahead of 2027 World Cup

New Zealand have split their ODI squad to balance preparations for the 2027 World Cup with the demands of the two-Test series against India. Captain Mitchell Santner will lead the side, with selectors using the five matches to assess combinations.

Only six players have been named for all five ODIs: Santner, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Will Young and Blair Tickner. Several Test specialists will leave after the third ODI to prepare for the red-ball series, while other players will join the squad for the final two matches.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra is set to return after recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during an advertisement shoot. The two-match Test series will begin at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on November 19.

The second Test will be played in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1. With the 2027 World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the ODI series will give the selectors an opportunity to assess their options while allowing Test specialists to prepare for the red-ball matches.
