The rise and rise of Trump’s favourite Maga women

In news that came as absolutely no surprise to anybody, Donald Trump’s former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed on Monday that she was the latest Republican set to take advantage of the cosy revolving door that continues to spin politicos out of public office and immediately into lucrative positions on right-wing cable TV news.

Leavitt’s new job at Fox News as an on-air contributor will, she said, afford her the capacity to bring “unique perspective…along with the same energy and candor that defined my tenure, to Fox’s millions of viewers across their many platforms”.

She joins an array of former Trump officials at the network, including Kayleigh McEnany who served as White House press secretary during his first administration, and whose most recent contribution to the network consisted of an interview with a “Make America Great Again” supporter who claims to have spent 18 days in the company of Jesus Christ while in a medically induced coma following a skateboard accident. The most interesting aspect of Leavitt’s new gig may prove to be the fact that she will be working from home in the battleground state of New Hampshire.

That stoked considerable speculation that she may seek to run for office there in 2028, having tried but failed to win a seat in Congress in 2022.

Suggestions that Leavitt plans to dish dirt on Trump in an upcoming autobiography are almost certainly overblown given both her loyalty to the President and her possible future dependence on him for an election endorsement. At just 29, she knows there should be plenty of time later in life to reveal what she really witnessed in the room where it happens.

As Leavitt’s career advances, US media reports are suggesting that the White House may have finally found her replacement. The new press secretary will be the conservative commentator Katie Zacharia, according to The New York Times, which cited two people familiar with the matter.

Zacharia is a communications adviser to Trump Media and Technology Group, which runs the President’s social media site Truth Social, according to her LinkedIn profile, and worked briefly in the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Another candidate who had been touted this week to replace Leavitt behind the White House podium is another Maga woman aiming for the skies. Beni Rae Harmony is a 24-year-old “trusted voice for the Maga movement”, according to a White House statement confirming her appointment as Trump’s new assistant press secretary.

So far, Harmony is best-known for a somewhat disharmonious photograph in which she poses holding a rifle while clad in a “F*** Joe Biden” T-shirt.

Until recently, she served as senior correspondent for the pro-Trump Real America’s Voice TV, which some have dubbed a propaganda network, and where on Thursday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth first revealed his plans to livestream the execution of convicted army major Nidal Hasan at Fort Hood on 3 December.

Harmony has impeccable hard-right credentials, having previously served as a press aide for Trump influencer Jack Posobiec and as a deputy press secretary for Congressman Paul Gosar and former congressman Matt Gaetz, two dyed-in-the-wool Trump boosters.

She accompanied Trump on his recent trip to Ireland as part of the officially sanctioned White House press corps, which represented quite a career recovery for her given that last year she resigned from a local TV channel in Springfield, Illinois, over comments she made praising Charlie Kirk after his assassination. There is a dispute over whether she was suspended from duty at WICS-TV or not, but either way her tearful tribute to Kirk (“a mentor, my first boss, the first person who made me believe in myself”) appears to have ignited her fall from grace.

How far Harmony’s career will advance at the White House is unclear, but she certainly fits the bill for an American President who values political loyalty over all other attributes, and has placed numerous women into prominent positions at a much earlier age than any of his predecessors.

Natalie Harp, the President’s so-called human printer, continues to serve as his executive assistant and was called on stage by Trump last week at a campaign rally in Nebraska where she furnished him with an executive order green-lighting the sale of tax-exempt diesel in an effort to bring energy prices down. The moment may, however, be better remembered for his decision publicly to compare her with a model on a television game show.

While tongues continue to wag about the precise nature of her role at the White House, Trump’s defenders argue that he has done far more to promote powerful women than his predecessors, and to set some of them up for political careers including former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, now the governor of Arkansas.

Leavitt will arrive at Fox News just in time to try and boost the flagging fortunes of Republican candidates in next month’s midterms. Harmony is taking up her position at the White House in time to defend any efforts Trump makes to obstruct the outcome if the Democrats sweep the board.
