Former college football coach Dennis Franchione dies at 75, per report

Dennis Franchione, the former head coach at TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M, has died, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was 75 years old.

Franchione, who began his coaching career at New Mexico, was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. Then, he had a tumor in his kidney. He overcame that, but was re-diagnosed in 2021. Franchione fought and reportedly reached full remission from the second diagnosis until earlier this year. He moved to hospice care in October, per the Star-Telegram’s report.

Franchione coached 20 years at the FBS level, compiling a 127-110 record. He joined the Horned Frogs in 1998 and produced a 25-10 record across three seasons. LaDanian Tomlinson morphed into an absolute superstar under Franchione, rushing for 2,158 yards in 2000 to help TCU to a 10-2 campaign.

Prior to TCU’s bowl game in 2000, Franchione left Fort Worth for Tuscaloosa. He took the Alabama coaching job while the program was being investigated, with potential sanctions coming down the tracks. The Crimson Tide went 10-3 in 2002, setting Franchione up to chase a national championship, but the NCAA’s penalties caused friction between coach and school. As a result, he controversially departed Alabama for Texas A&M, where he posted a 32-28 record in five seasons.

Franchione rounded out his career with Texas State, whom he previously coached before reaching the FBS ranks. He went 20-28 during four years with the Bobcats (2012-2015).

Despite it being his shortest coaching tenure, Franchione’s biggest impact came with the Horned Frogs. His foundation allowed Gary Patterson to push TCU to the heights it reached in the 21st century. According to the Star-Telegram, Franchione said his “greatest coaching years” were the ones in Fort Worth. His statement is evidence that the best things in life can be fleeting.
