Mets first baseman Jared Young had his 2026 campaign cut short after a nasty collision with Nolan McLean. He was knocked unconscious and had to be stretchered off the field. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com spoke to Young yesterday and reports he is recovering well and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
Young suffered a concussion along with neck and ear issues. He hasn’t fully regained his hearing, but anticipates it will return soon. He can’t remember the hours after the collision.
“How quick baseball can turn into life,” Young said, relayed by DiComo. “It was a scary thing, but it’s real. I cared about getting a hit that morning. I wanted to win that game, and I wanted to hit a home run and celebrate with my teammates. Very quickly did [that change to] I just wanted to get home.”
The unfortunate injury ended a solid season for Young. He slashed .266/.330/.429 across 103 games in his first extended look in the big leagues. Young broke camp with the team but went down in April with a knee injury that required surgery. He returned near the end of May and became an everyday starter at first base and DH.

Young stepped into regular reps with Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos ailing. Polanco was set to be New York’s answer at first base after Pete Alonso departed in free agency. Instead, wrist and ankle injuries limited him to 37 games. Vientos broke his hand shortly before the All-Star Break and didn’t return until the final day of August.
Polanco still has a year left on the $40MM deal he signed over the winter. He’ll be in the mix at first base in 2027. Vientos remains a corner infield option as well. There could be openings around the infield if the club trades Polanco, Marcus Semien, or Francisco Lindor this offseason. Bo Bichette can also opt out of his contract. It seems likely that something will change on this roster, which should afford Young opportunties next season.
