Financial services firm Morningstar will move its global headquarters to the Thompson Center, joining tech giant Google.
The company said Wednesday it would occupy 275,000 square feet in the building. Google has been redeveloping the former state government’s office hub at 171 N. LaSalle St., which opened in 1985, into its Chicago headquarters, where it plans to employ 2,000 people.
“Morningstar was founded in Chicago more than four decades ago, and we’re proud to continue building our future here,” Morningstar CEO Kunal Kapoor said in a news release. “As long-term investors, we believe in backing people and communities with enduring potential. Our new headquarters and community commitment reflect our confidence in Chicago, our people, and the opportunities ahead.”
Morningstar has more than 1,500 Chicago employees, according to the news release. It plans to move in late 2028 from its current office at 22 W. Washington St.
The company also announced plans to donate $5 million to Chicago nonprofits over five years, starting next year. It will give $1 million to the Commercial Club Foundation toward supporting a yearslong effort to strengthen Chicago’s economic future. The remaining $4 million will be for grant funding to nonprofit organizations focusing on “securing financial futures and career skills advancement for Chicagoland residents,” through the new Morningstar Commitment to Chicago Fund, the news release said.
“Morningstar’s decision to relocate its global headquarters to the Thompson Center reaffirms its longstanding commitment to our city and its continued confidence in our central business district and the future of the LaSalle Street corridor,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in the news release. “Morningstar’s $5 million commitment to local nonprofits will also help Chicagoans build financial security and gain the skills to pursue good-paying careers, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth extend beyond downtown and into our neighborhoods.”
Construction started on the Thompson Center in 2024. The $280 million renovation initially was scheduled to finish in 2027, but Google officials said earlier this month that it would open in 2028.
New renderings show plans to restore the atrium’s original elevator glass wall and cabs, along with a 30-foot-tall sculpture outside the property by New York City-based artist Sanford Biggers.
