The Head of Abu Marawat Gold Mines, Ayman Ibrahim, announced that Egypt’s mining sector is witnessing an unprecedented phase of streamlined processes and expedited procedures, with the Abu Marawat Gold Mines readying to begin production by next year.
He explained that the pre-production phase usually takes three to four years, adding that actual production is scheduled to commence in 2027.
Speaking on the sidelines of a mining conference, Ibrahim explained that the “open block” system—introduced during the latest mineral resources tender—has brought about a qualitative shift in the mining sector.
He added that tendering for gold, phosphate, and kaolin exploration helps simplify and accelerate the offering process compared to the previous system.
Gold exploration
Regarding the allocation of approximately 70 percent of the areas in the latest tender to gold exploration, Ibrahim noted that this attracts a significant number of investors, driven by the rapid evolution and sharp surges in global gold prices.
He referred to significant opportunities and promising indicators of economically viable reserves—with grades ranging from one to two grams per tonne—typically attract investor interest, making the gold sector an appealing prospect for major global and local companies.
Ibrahim said that the company is currently in a transitional phase, which involves completing infrastructure and technical studies, as well as finalizing plant preparations in accordance with the latest global environmental standards.
Ibrahim explained that estimates indicate the project’s reserve volume stands at approximately 150,000 ounces, rising to around half a million ounces in certain areas.
