OK, actually, I could finish that sentence like ten different ways. There isn’t a singular “thing” that made his season remarkable. It was so many things.
That said, I do find it absolutely incredible that a guy who led the league in offensive production just so happens to also be one of the best defensive players in the last decade. Either one would be impressive. The combination is just silly.
Throw in the baserunning, and you have the recipe for a guy to do something that has never been done before in the Statcast Era (2016+):

Indeed, even if you drop the percentile cut-off to 95, there are just TWO other seasons that pull off the feat: Bobby Witt Jr. in 2024, and Mookie Betts in 2018. It is nearly impossible to be this good at all three phases of the game, and PCA has been the best of the best in the last decade.
I can only assume that if Pete Crow-Armstrong had just been a tick better at baserunning – better than anyone else, that is, and reached the 100th percentile – the entire system would’ve collapsed in on itself in digital disbelief. I’m not sure Statcast could’ve survived such an impossible season. If one player were the absolute tip-top best in all three phases, might Statcast become concerned that its weights are broken? Surely no human could actually do that, right?!
I guess we’ll have to find out in 2027.
