Former Penn State offensive lineman Landon Tengwall said the group was “mauling” Florida State’s defense in its Week 3 matchup.
The Crimson Tide’s offensive line struggles in 2025 weren’t due to a lack of talent. Left tackle Kadyn Proctor was the No. 12 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and center Parker Brailsford was selected in the fifth round. It was fit and schematic issues that played a large part in the group’s inconsistencies, and head coach Kalen DeBoer responded by replacing offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic with Adrian Klemm.
Beyond the coaching change, Alabama overhauled its personnel at offensive line, with six transfers joining the room. DeBoer’s zone-heavy offense is tailor-made for leaner, more athletic linemen who can push defenses laterally on wide zone runs and sweeps.

Lloyd is ranked No. 10 in Pro Football Network’s impact ratings for offensive linemen, and James ranked in the top 15 before Alabama’s game against South Carolina, which he had to leave early due to an injury. They have allowed five total pressures in 500 combined snaps, and neither one has given up a sack.
“He is making our program’s culture better every single day,” DeBoer said of Lloyd. “He’s continued to grow, because he’s still a younger player, but it’s going to happen because he puts the extra time in, above and beyond.
Right guard Michael Carroll missed Alabama’s game against Kentucky due to injury, but the sophomore’s impact has been felt in the games he has played in. According to Alabama’s metrics, Carroll didn’t miss an assignment against Florida State, a game in which the Crimson Tide scored 50 points.
It would have been reasonable to expect early struggles from an offensive line rife with youth and newcomers, but the group has had many highlights through Alabama’s first three weeks.
Although the Crimson Tide has had slow starts on offense, it has run for 150 yards and 220 yards in the second halves against Kentucky and Florida State, respectively. Those numbers represent dramatic steps forward after Alabama ranked in the bottom 15 of rushing offenses in the nation.
Alabama’s best competition is still ahead of it, but there are enough signs of significant improvement in the run game for DeBoer and his staff to believe they picked the right crop of linemen.
“It goes back to the offseason, when you get asked so much about ‘How are we going to improve the run game?’” DeBoer said. “My answer was that everyone needs to just get a little bit better, across the board.”
