A high school student from Naperville wanted to do something to address food insecurity in her community, and she started Empower Futurewave with her little sister.
“So many restaurants, they have to cook fresh, prepared meals every single day,” said Navya Sha. “But at the of the end the day they don’t have the infrastructure to store leftover food, (so) they dispose of it. I have a system to bring those meals from restaurant and donor to shelters.”
Navya created an app called Bridge to Meal that uses student volunteers to rescue surplus prepared meals from restaurants and event kitchens in Naperville and get them to shelters in real time.
Donors post available surplus food with pickup windows, quantities, and location details. Volunteers receive alerts for nearby requests, accept pickups, and follow delivery directions. Shelters receive matched meals based on their current needs and availability.
Navya says her team currently has about 20 student volunteers. Her goal is to expand the program into Chicago and other countries.
“Last year we had about 6,000 meals delivered,” Navya said. “I think this year we are currently somewhere around 9,000, so total I’d say like 15,000 meals so far.”
Her foundation also offers ESL classes in several countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, Vietnam, India, Peru, Tanzania, Colombia, and Myanmar.
“You can make a difference, whoever you are, wherever you are. Everyone has an hour to give. You don’t have to have a lot of money to do something good for the world,” she said.
