University President Peter J. Mohler, University provost Lesley Reid and SGA President Samantha Simmons spoke at the Fall Campus Assembly Tuesday about Mohler’s “Future-Ready Flagship” initiative and plans for the remainder of the school year.
Mohler spoke for the majority of the assembly, reflecting on the first year of his presidency and the changes made across the University that align with the Future-Ready Flagship.
“Last spring, we talked about where we wanted to be as a university. Today, you’ve seen some of the progress we’ve made of the last five months,” Mohler said “Now, the question is, ‘What difference are we making for Alabama, for leaders and for the future?’”
Mohler said Alabama had climbed 13 spots nationally in the U.S. News and World Report Rankings, and was named the top-ranked best-value school for students in Alabama.
He also announced the development of three new “future-ready” hubs in Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile similar to the Wiregrass Hub.
“Each new hub will reflect the needs and the economy of its region, helping us recruit Alabama students, strengthen industry partnerships, expand internships and workforce development and bring our research and expertise directly to communities,” Mohler said. “That is what it means to be Alabama’s flagship. Our reach and our responsibility must extend well beyond Tuscaloosa, and that responsibility begins even before students arrive on campus.”
All UA faculty and staff were invited to hear the various speakers, beginning with Reid.
“Over the past several months, we’ve asked our deans to look at the work underway in their colleges and identify, ‘Where can we go further?’ What they share makes clear: faculty and staff are putting our future-ready commitments into action every single day,” Reid said.
Reid said some of Mohler’s projects, including the expansion of the Capstone College of Nursing and the new School of Leadership and Policy and School of Data Science, positioned Alabama to lead “where the need and the opportunity are greatest.”
“It is hard to overstate what these investments will make possible: more students ready to meet critical workforce needs, new areas of study and discovery, and new ways to prepare leaders for what comes next,” she said.
After mentioning other developments across campus, Reid said that as the University develops the post-tenure review process, they were working in consultation with Tricia McElroy, faculty senate president, and the faculty senate.
“I’m honored to share what a Future-Ready Flagship looks like from the faculty perspective. Faculty research enriches human knowledge and offers solutions to the challenges of our world, while their dedicated teaching ensures the growth and success of our students,” McElroy said. “President Mohler, our more than 2,100 UA faculty are future-ready.”
Simmons spoke on behalf of University students and the SGA, mentioning the SGA’s new partnerships with the University’s School of Law and the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, and their work with the Division of Student Life to provide financial support to students. She said that the SGA’s work was directly related to the faculty’s support.
“We are grateful for their investment in helping our students engage meaningfully with the community around them,” Simmons said. “When we work together, I feel confident that we can ensure that our students are future-ready. I am grateful for all of you.”
Mohler emphasized that his Future-Ready Flagship initiative was a collaboration fueled by the faculty and staff.
“The foundation is here, and now I want us to build on it. If you have a great idea at Alabama, you should have a path to pursue it, no matter what you study,” Mohler said.
