Michael Clarke has picked Kuldeep Yadav as the best current all-format spinner in world cricket ahead of India’s ODI series against West Indies.
The former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes the India wrist-spinner has the skills to succeed across formats, despite not always getting regular opportunities in the national side.
Michael Clarke pointed out that very few spinners currently operate across all three formats, making Kuldeep's record particularly notable. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, he backed the left-arm wrist-spinner as the leading all-format option.
"There are very few spinners playing all three formats. I think Kuldeep Yadav is the best all-format spinner in the world at the moment. He's a very good short-form bowler. But he's not getting enough opportunities. Though I think he'll play for India against Australia."
Kuldeep Yadav has taken 80 wickets in 19 Tests, averaging 23.36 with an economy rate of 3.56. He has five five-wicket hauls in the longest format, including a best of 5/40.
His ODI numbers are equally impressive. The 31-year-old has claimed 194 wickets in 121 matches at an average of 27.04 and an economy rate of 5.07. His best ODI figures are 6/25, while he has two five-wicket hauls in the format.
In T20Is, Kuldeep Yadav has taken 95 wickets in 54 matches at an average of 13.74. His economy rate of 6.95 is also comfortably below seven, while his best figures are 5/17. Kuldeep Yadav has two five-wicket hauls in the format.
Monty Panesar hails Keshav Maharaj as best all-format spinner
Michael Clarke's view, however, is not shared by former England spinner Monty Panesar. The former international believes Keshav Maharaj currently deserves the distinction, particularly because of his ability to control games with his accuracy and variation.
Keshav Maharaj has established himself as a regular across formats for South Africa and continues to play an important role in the team's bowling attack.
"The best spinner for me is Keshav Maharaj, just by the way he is bowling at the moment. He has got it on a string and attacks and defends equally well," Panesar said.
Maharaj has taken 218 wickets in 62 Tests, averaging 29.22 with an economy rate of 3.10. His ODI record includes 77 wickets in 57 matches at 29.76, with an economy rate of 4.67.
The South African has also played 54 T20Is and taken 55 wickets. His average in the format is 26.30, while he has maintained an economy rate of 7.87.
Kuldeep Yadav to be seen in action against West Indies, Keshav Maharaj shining vs Australia
Kuldeep Yadav is set to feature for India in the three-match ODI series against West Indies, beginning in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27. The second ODI will be played in Guwahati on September 30, before the series moves to New Chandigarh for the third match on October 3.
Maharaj, meanwhile, is currently involved in South Africa's three-match ODI series against Australia. The second ODI will be played in Johannesburg on September 27, with the final match scheduled for Potchefstroom on September 30.
Maharaj made an immediate impact in the opening game in Durban, taking 4/20 in 9.2 overs as South Africa bowled Australia out for 230 after posting 297/8. The Proteas won by 67 runs, with Maharaj playing a central role in restricting Australia's chase.
