When Justin Cooper was a child actor in the ’90s, it all felt like fun and games on the sets of movies like Dennis the Menace Strikes Again! and his ABC sitcom, Brother’s Keeper. Little did he know that his rising fame was causing a frightening situation for his family.
After Cooper’s first big movie, the 1997 blockbuster Liar, Liar starring Jim Carrey, his mom intercepted fan mail sent to the eight year old from “dudes in jail,” he revealed on the Not So Little Rascals podcast, hosted by fellow former child stars Jordan Warkol & Blake Collins, who played Froggy & Woim in 1994’s The Little Rascals.
Cooper, who played Carrey’s adorable son, Max Reede, told Warkol and Collins, “My mom did a really good job of shielding me from stuff. She would tell me later on about, like, prison mail that I would get that she never showed me. Like letters from people in jail, talking about how — you know, dudes in jail — talking about how they’re such a big fan of me and I’m… ‘such a cute kid.'”
Shocked by Cooper’s story, Warkol and Collins said they’d never received any fan mail from prisoners during their years as child stars, declaring the situation as “next level” and “wild,” and praising Cooper’s mom for protecting him.
“She never, ever left me alone with anybody on set,” Cooper said. “You know, there’s a lot of acting parents that you hear of, back in the day, that were just like, ‘Yeah, go do whatever they tell you to do.’ And my mom was not like that, and almost to a fault.”

As an example of how strict his mom was about shielding her little boy from unsavory behavior, he told another story from the set of his 1998 Dennis the Menace movie, in which the late comedy legend Don Rickles played Mr. Wilson.
“You know, he was known for being a foulmouthed comic,” Cooper laughed, “and she went up to him and was like, ‘I don’t want you to use any language like that in front of my kid.’ I was like, ‘Mom! Whoa.'”
Cooper also remembered being swarmed by fans after Liar, Liar was released. The massive hit, about a lawyer who’s a pathological liar who suddenly cannot bring himself to tell a lie for a whole day, set box office records in its opening weekend.
“I couldn’t really go anywhere in public,” Cooper said on the podcast. “I think it probably annoyed my family a little bit more (than me), because we would go to Hometown Buffet for dinner. We would go and, then there would just be a line at my table of people wanting to get my autograph. I didn’t mind it. I thought it was cool.”
Cooper eventually left show business, with his last credited role in an episode of The Practice in 2003. He graduated from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and works as the executive producer of The Ben Maller Show on Fox Sports Radio, where he’s worked for 14 years.
In 2021, Cooper appeared on Fox Sports Radio anchor Bryan Fenley’s podcast, describing his time on set with Carrey nearly three decades ago as “awesome,” but he’s clearly passionate about the work he does now on Maller’s national overnight show.
