The Eagle Hope

My new buddy.
Yesterday on my weekly drive to Blair, I saw something that appeared to be dead in the middle of the highway. Pretty typical this time of year, especially out in the country. As I passed by, it became obvious that a beautiful Bald Eagle had been hit and likely going to be smashed all over the road by the constant truck traffic.
A sense of urgency hit me to do SOMETHING, even if it was to just pull the carcass off of the highway to offer respect to this beautiful creature and symbol of pride in our country.
When I turned around and pulled off the road to figure out what to do next, another truck blew past. I watched in agony as it went right over the bird but, miraculously, without the wheels hitting it. The gust of air under its wings brought the Eagle up to where I could see that it was still alive, yet unknown how badly injured.
Frantically I waved down the constant traffic from both sides and eventually they began to slow and everyone stopped to give me an opportunity to try to pull the Eagle off the highway to the side of the road.
I didn’t expect that it would make it but as a few minutes went by it started to show some reaction and began to look around. With some additional help from a gentleman that had stopped we called in some resources. Several sheriffs and an animal rescue shortly arrived to provide some assistance and took her to be evaluated.
Last night I received a wonderful call that my new friend was being transferred to a raptor recovery center in Elmwood Nebraska to hopefully continue to recover.
This beautiful creature had many people rooting for her to make it and I am thankful that they all took a moment to slow down. It renewed my faith in the kindness of strangers and our common desire to pitch in.
Very emotional day and grateful to have been at the right place at the right time. Everything happens for a reason!
Two weeks later, Evan from Raptor Rescue called to say that this beautiful creature we named “Hope” was doing well and was going to be released. We met at DeSoto Wildlife Refuge near where we found her. Hope was sent back to find her way home as we watched with such joy as she found flight once again.
Hope represents all of us. Troubled times ask for each of us to not look away but just do what we can to help a stranger or anyone, anything in need.
Thank you, Hope, for inspiring so many of us with your beautiful spirit and your willingness to accept some help from strangers.
You are truly a symbol of beauty and strength that is so needed in today’s world.
