Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman is back in the lineup despite suffering multiple facial fractures after being hit by a foul ball last weekend.
The Cubs listed Bregman as a designated hitter in the lineup for Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox.
Bregman was standing near the on-deck circle during Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds when Michael Busch hit a foul ball with a check swing. The ball bounced once off the turf and hit Bregman just below his left eye.
According to the Cubs, Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures, but the team did not put him on the injured list with just days left in the regular season. Bregman had been aiming to get back in the lineup in enough time to be ready for the playoffs. The Cubs clinched their spot in the playoffs Thursday with a win over the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
Bregman previously spoke to reporters and said despite his rough appearance, he was feeling fortunate the injury wasn’t worse.
“(I was) super lucky it hit where it hit and just a lot of gratitude that it wasn’t a few centimeters higher,” he said.
Manager Craig Counsell said he was happy with Bregman’s progress so far.
“He’s still got significant swelling in his face and his eye that needs to improve,” he said. “But all things considered, he’s in a good place.”
Bregman’s addition to the lineup comes after the Cubs placed pitcher Edward Cabrera on the family medical emergency list, but details behind the designation were not immediately released. Gavin Hollowell was reinstated from the injury list in his place.
The Cubs’ doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox Friday has seen multiple time changes so far as a looming nor’easter threatens the games through the weekend.
Earlier this week, officials announced Sunday’s game with the Cubs would move to a 12:05 p.m. CT start on Friday afternoon. The two teams were then expected to play the second game of a split doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. CT Friday.
