UNC-Chapel Hill placed in the top 5 of public universities once again in the latest U.S. News & World Report’s latest Best Colleges Rankings — marking a milestone streak for the school while another ended.
The 2027 edition of the rankings is the 25th consecutive year UNC has ranked in the top 5 of public schools. It came in at No. 5 this year — down one spot from the 2026 rankings — behind the University of California-Berkley, the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia. Additionally, Carolina placed in the top spot of U.S. News’ Best Value Schools for In-State Students list based on its academic quality, base tuition price, net price, financial aid options and average discount.
“Over the last 25 years, Carolina has been the leader in combining educational excellence with outstanding value,” UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts said in a university release about the rankings. “We are particularly proud to be recognized as the nation’s best value for in-state students. These rankings affirm our commitment to serving North Carolina while maintaining the academic excellence expected of the nation’s first public university.”

Overall, UNC tied for 27th with the University of Southern California in the National University rankings, which measures both public and private schools. Similar to the top public schools list, it represents a one-place drop from the 2025 rankings. Additionally, Carolina lost its long-held top spot as the Best Value School among public universities — dropping from No. 1 to No. 3 behind the University of Idaho and University of Wisconsin-Madison. UNC had previously held the Best Value Public University title for 21 years, which is generated from a blend of academic quality, grants and scholarship aid, average discount and percentage of students receiving aid.
Meanwhile, the UNC System’s flagship university finished fifth among public schools for veterans and tied for 12th overall in the category. The ranking factors in support for military-connected students and their families, with Carolina highlighting its military-affiliated programs in the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the School of Medicine, and School of Nursing. UNC also tied at No. 3 for the best public undergraduate business program, No. 4 for best public Bachelor of Science in nursing, No. 6 in best public psychology programs, and No. 16 in the Most Innovative Public School ranking.
The U.S. News & World Reports Best Colleges Rankings come after the publication evaluated more than 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities by using up to 17 factors. The full 2027 overall rankings list can be found on its website, as well as its updated UNC page.
