Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan may be inseparable on MobLand, but the longtime actors have a very different relationship away from the cameras.
Despite playing married couple Maeve and Conrad Harrigan — and working together on multiple projects — the actors told Hello! they don’t spend much time together when they aren’t working.
“Honestly, we don’t hang; we don’t go out for dinner,” Mirren, 81, said.
“No, but we send the odd text: ‘How are you doing?’, ‘How’s the summer going?'” Brosnan, 73, added.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of admiration between them. Mirren previously made no secret of her desire to work with the former James Bond star, a wish that came true when the pair worked on both The Thursday Murder Club and MobLand.
“I’ve been quoted as saying I would pay a lot of money to work with Pierce Brosnan for the rest of my life,” Mirren said with a laugh.
Their professional connection, however, was immediate.
“I recognized a fellow professional,” Mirren said.
Brosnan similarly described Mirren as “a fellow actor of the same cloth. We’re both from the theater.”
Their respective real-life relationships are much longer than the professional partnership between them. Brosnan has been married to journalist and filmmaker Keely Shaye Smith for 25 years. His first wife, Cassandra Harris, died from ovarian cancer in 1991. Mirren will celebrate her 30th wedding anniversary with filmmaker Taylor Hackford next year.
That experience with long-term relationships helps inform Maeve and Conrad, who can be ruthless one moment and resemble an ordinary married couple the next.
“I think the great thing about their relationship is that, yes, they can go out and commit murder and mayhem, but when they’re at home they’re like an old married couple,” Mirren explained.
“It’s like, ‘Why are you leaving your socks in the middle of the bedroom? I’m tripping over them. Put your bloody socks away!’ Or, ‘You know where your belt is. It’s been in the same spot for 20 years!'”
Mirren said that contrast is an important part of what makes the Harrigans recognizable despite the violent world surrounding them.
“So they are an absolutely mundane, ordinary, old-time married couple, and I think it’s the juxtaposition of those two elements that people find so interesting,” she said. “And when you see Maeve and Conrad at home – in the bedroom, in the bathroom, there’s always one of them on the loo and the other one’s shouting into the bedroom – they are so identifiable.”
Brosnan agreed that those domestic scenes help ground the characters.
“It’s so familiar. It’s almost like their own little play within this madcap world, and that’s what grounds it – very much the mum and dad at home trying to run this empire of violence and mayhem,” he said.
As MobLand Season 2 continues, Conrad faces new challenges after the dog-track bloodbath and a medical diagnosis of diminishing impulse control.
“You find Conrad at this point as really a fractured man; a man dealing with his own mortality,” Brosnan said. “Mortality is circling the wagons. His mind is beginning to be affected by something unknown that he doesn’t really want to deal with.”
His relationship with Maeve remains at the center of that struggle.
“And he has to deal with Maeve, who he loves. But he’s dealing with the fear of death, the fear of losing everything,” Brosnan said. “There’s a frailty, and he’s venomous. He’s like a trapped spider in a bottle – trying to find his way out, and each way he turns there’s no exit.”
MobLand is preparing to begin filming Season 3.
