Australian Olympic medalist-turned-swim coach Peter Tonkin has retired after 55 years in the sport, with Swimming Australia announcing the news on Thursday.
Tonkin, 78, dedicated over half of his life to Australian swimming as both an athlete and a coach.

Born in 1948, Tonkin represented Australia at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo at the age of 16, where he won a bronze medal as part of the men’s 4×100 medley relay in addition to racing the men’s 200 breaststroke.
One of just 19 athletes on the 1964 Australian Olympic swimming team, Tonkin was joined in the ranks by Dawn Fraser, while Don Talbot served as the head coach.
A few years after becoming an Olympic medalist, Tonkin kickstarted his coaching career at the Croydon Amateur Swimming Club in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges in 1971.
Tonkin stayed in that spot for almost three decades before taking up a role in the Northern Territory in the early 2000s, where he helped develop swimming programs in Indigenous communities. He eventually moved to Halls Creek in Western Australia to serve as the manager of the town’s local aquatic and recreation center.
In 2011, Tonkin helped create Swimming Australia’s National Indigenous Program, which provided swim lessons and water safety skills for Indigenous communities around the country.
Tonkin became the head coach of the Launceston Aquatic Club in Tasmania in 2017, a role he held until 2022.
Tonkin received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019 in recognition of his extraordinary service to the sport.
He was awarded Life Membership of Swimming Australia in 2023, a prestigious honor bestowed upon individuals who have made lasting impacts on the sport of swimming in Australia.
According to Swimming Australia, Tonkin will be enjoying his retirement on Tasmania’s East Coast.
