The Fitzroy River in Queensland has been announced as the host site for the Rowing events for the 2032 Olympics. The river is reportedly home to around 500 crocodiles, though the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) has confirmed the location is safe.
In a report from People.com, World Rowing and Paddle Australia endorsed the new site after the Queensland Government completed a sustainability assessment. The GIICA tested the site and confirmed that the location can “provide a safe, fair and consistent field of play suitable for rowing, Para rowing, canoe sprint and Para canoe events.”

The rivers are also known as a crocodile habitat, with around 500 crocodiles living in the river. They are protected under the Nature Conservation Act in 1992, which makes killing, injuring, or taking crocodiles from the wild without necessary permits an offense.
The Fitzroy River has also hosted several national team competitions for flatwater sports, with the Olympic event hoping to inspire local athletes and help grow the local economy.
Drew Ginn, a three-time Australian Olympic champion rower, said the added crocodile element could raise warning flags for competitors.
“I’m sure I’d row faster; I’m sure all the athletes would row faster,” Ginn said in the report from People. “That’s on the list of concerns, I don’t think it’s the highest priority in concerns but it was certainly cited very early on.”
Brisbane Olympic President Andrew Liveris had previously backed the river as the location for 2032. Citing the fact that there were sharks in the water when surfers were competing in Tahiti.
