The Chicago River Swim scheduled for Sunday was canceled by organizers due to conditions on the river caused by heavy overnight rains.
Organizers made the decision shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday, according to a Facebook post.
“After monitoring weather and river conditions throughout the night, we have made the difficult decision to cancel today’s Chicago River Swim,” organizers said. “The safety of our athletes, volunteers, staff and partners must come first. We know how much training and anticipation went into today, and we share your disappointment.”
This year’s event was set to be the second annual swim on the river, a celebration of the steps taken to make the river cleaner and safe for swimming according to organizers.
Though the event itself was canceled due to the weather, participants were still invited to the Chicago Brewhouse for a celebration on Sunday afternoon.
In addition, all individuals who had registered for the swim will automatically be registered for next year’s event, according to officials.
Funds raised for charity will also still be sent to the organization’s official charity partners.
