BUFFALO N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Red Wings have officially clinched a playoff spot. Rochester beat the Buffalo Bisons 15-8 on Sunday, punching their ticket.
The Wings needed both the Indianapolis Indians and Syracuse Mets to lose on Saturday night to officially book their ticket, and both things happened, setting things up for a win and in scenario on Sunday. Rochester took care of business and will appear in the Triple-A postseason for the first time since 2013.
Rochester was one game back from winning the first half of the International League, and it looked like that might be the case again, but one of the most dominant teams in Triple-A will appear in the playoffs. They finished the season with an overall record of 90-58, their most wins in a single season since 1953.
The playoffs are a very exclusive club, with only four teams making it – the first half winners of the International League and Pacific Coast League, plus the second half winners, which is how Rochester made their way in.
Round one will be a best-of-3 series with Rochester playing at Memphis. The series starts Sept. 22.
