A woman and a police officer were shot and another person was injured in a shooting that broke out near Notre Dame’s campus in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday.
Authorities said the shots rang out around 6:30 p.m. CT, shortly after tailgating was shut down at Notre Dame and crowds began moving towards Eddy Street Commons, according to North Bend’s NBC affiliate station, WNDU.
A fight broke out near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard and a shot was fired, police said. A woman was shot and the police officer was hit by either shrapnel or a ricochet, police said. Both were taken to a local hospital and were expected to recover.
A third person was also injured during the incident, but not by the gunfire, police said. It was believed they were likely hurt during the fire, police said.
After the shooting, parking garages and businesses were cleared and people were moved out of Eddy Street commons.
The area remained shut down for a police investigation as of 9:20 p.m. and it was not immediately clear when it would reopen.
“Our officers are responding to the report of a shooting in the area of Eddy Street Commons. This is an active scene with a large response from our department. Please avoid the area. If you’re already in the area, please listen to safety instructions from officers on-scene,” South Bend police said in a post on social media.

According to Notre Dame officials, the suspected shooter ran west from the scene. They described the suspect as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks who was wearing blue shorts, a black shirt with a red and blue design on the front and one white shoe. It was not immediately clear if the person was in custody as of when the shelter in place was lifted.
