Left-arm spinner Nahida Akhter and all-rounder Sobhana Mostary have emerged as the frontrunners to replace Nigar Sultana as Bangladesh's next T20I captain. Nigar informed about her decision to step down as the T20I captain via an email.
Her decision came shortly after the Bangladesh women's national cricket team's 2026 Asia Cup ended and a few days ahead of the Asian Games in Japan. Nigar Sultana will step down from her position as the national team's T20I set-up after the Asian Games, but will carry on her duties for the ODI team.
As Nigar has decided to step down from the leadership role, the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) women's cricket wing will have to find a proper replacement for her.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Nahida Akhter and Sobhana Mostary have emerged as the front runners. One of the BCB sources confirmed to the media house the developments revolving around the captain's chair for the women's T20I team.
"I think there are not too many cricketers around to replace Sultana, but as she decided to step down, we have to find someone. Nahida and Sobhana are strong contenders, taking into consideration their position in the shorter format," the BCB source told the news website.
BCB did not expect Nigar Sultana to resign
Nigar Sultana's resignation from her positions came as a shocker to the BCB officials,s as no one expected her to step down from the captaincy role. The actual reason behind Sultana's decision to step away from the role is yet to be revealed, but it is believed that the wicketkeeper-batter was disappointed with the way she had been treated by the board in recent times.
Alongside the controversies around Nigar Sultana, her recent poor form could also be an influential reason behind her decision. In the recently concluded Women's Asia Cup, she was one of the most flop batters across the tournament.
Additionally, in the past, her attitude towards her own teammates also raised concerns about Nigar. Former Bangladesh cricketer Jahanara Alam had previously alleged that Sultana abused players in the dressing room and sought to run the team in an autocratic manner.
Bangladesh is likely to appoint new head coach
The media report also informed that alongside selecting the next leader for the senior women's cricket team for the T20Is, the board officials are likely to groom a young cricketer who has leadership qualities. Rabeya Khatun, who has previously led the A team, and all-rounder Shorna Akhter could be among the young cricketers who are likely to be in BCB's future planning.
Changes in the national side's coaching set-up are also expected, as the cricket board is likely to remove Sarowar Imran as the head coach after the Asian Games. Former Bangladesh High Performance head coach David Hemp is reportedly in line to replace Imran for the prestigious position. She has also previously worked with the women's team.
The Bangladesh women's cricket team will play the Asian Games semi-final in Japan on September 21 against India under the leadership of Sultana.
