One person was hospitalized after their car was struck by a Metra train in a northwest suburb of Chicago on Friday, authorities said.
The person was injured when outbound Union Pacific Northwest train no. 652 struck their vehicle around noon near the intersection of Hart Road and Route 14 in Barrington, officials said.
The crash caused “extensive delays” on the UPNW train line and prompted authorities to advise people to avoid the area throughout their investigation.
Aerial video from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed a badly damaged red vehicle in a wooded area off the side of the road with investigators working nearby. The car appeared to have been sent through a guard rail and a fence and then into a ditch.
Authorities did not provide details regarding the severity of the driver’s injuries or what led to the collision.
